Article Summary

Webtrends recommends that you have at minimum two SmartSource Data Collector (SDC) servers behind a loadbalancer. The SDC server is unable to collect data while it is being reinstalled or upgraded.

Note

If you are upgrading from SDC v7.5 or earlier, please contact Webtrends Technical Support.

Preparation for upgrade or recovery

  1. Contact Webtrends Technical Support for the installation files for both version of the SmartSource Data Collector that you have now and the version you are upgrading to.
  2. Stop the SmartSource Data Collector in IIS.
  3. Backup the dcs.cfg and webtrendssites.lst files from the cfg folder and any log files from the weblog folder to an alternate location.

Upgrading the SmartSource Data Collector

  1. Uninstall the SmartSource Data Collector from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Delete the SmartSource Data Collector installation directory.
  3. Install the newest version of SmartSource Data Collector using the stand-alone installation file. Install guide found here.
  4. Open the the previous versions dcs.cfg and notate the values for the following settings (most common changes):
    a. logfiledir
    b. hostedmodel
    c. servicemodel
    d. splitlogs
  5. Update the values in the new dcs.cfg to match the previous versions values (with the 9.3 SDC there are additional values specified in the file. Simple copy and paste replacement is not recommended).
  6. Replace the webtrendssites.lst files in the cfg folder with the file that we backed up.
  7. Restore any log files from the backup to the weblog folder.
  8. Restart the The SmartSource Data Collector in IIS.
  9. Test SmartSource Data Collector functionality.

How to test a SmartSource Data Collector installation

In order to test, a valid DCSID is required. The DCSID dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p is created by default with new SDC installations. Check the webtrendssites.lst file for a valid DCSID for your installation.

If dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p is listed in your webtrendssites.lst file, the following URL can be used for testing:
http://<sdc_server_name>/dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p/dcs.gif?dcsuri=/test.html&dcsref=webtrends.com

Replace "<sdc_server_name>" with the fully qualified domain name, host name, or IP address of the data collector server and replace the value "dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p" with the dcsid to be tested.
