The SDC server is unable to collect data while it is being reinstalled or upgraded. :::(Info) (Note) **If you are upgrading from SDC v7.5 or earlier**, please contact Webtrends Technical Support. ::: :::(Internal) (Old info) #### Understanding Standard Model, Hosted Model, Service Model Before v7.5a, you may have configured SDC for Standard Model or Hosted Model. Standard Model collects Web activity data for one domain, and the request from your Web site to the SDC is `http://hostname/dcs.gif`. Because Standard Model doesn’t include a SmartSource Site ID (DCSID) in the JavaScript tag and consequently, the request to SDC, when you upgrade you will create a SmartSource data source, and in the process, generate a SmartSource Site ID. Hosted Model collects Web activity data for multiple domains or sections of a site using a DCSID for each domain that you want to track in isolation. You can continue to use existing SmartSource IDs, and you will also configure the SDC site map file to recognize them. #### Service Model Features With SDC v7.5a and higher, the installation configures SDC for Service Model. Service Model allows you to analyze activity for all SmartSource Site IDs (DCSIDs) by providing the account rollup data source. WebTrends creates the account rollup data source automatically when all data sources in your installation are SmartSource data sources. If your data sources are a mix of SmartSource data sources and other types of data sources, the account rollup data source is not automatically created. Service Model is also required for those using WebTrends Marketing Warehouse and those using the Express Analysis feature for WebTrends software which provides constantly updatable reporting based on your SDC log files. For more information, see “Express Analysis” in the *WebTrends Administration User’s Guide*. ::: ## Preparation for upgrade or recovery 1. Contact Webtrends Technical Support for the installation files for both version of the SmartSource Data Collector that you have now and the version you are upgrading to. 2. Stop the SmartSource Data Collector in IIS. 3. Backup the dcs.cfg and webtrendssites.lst files from the cfg folder and any log files from the weblog folder to an alternate location. ## Upgrading the SmartSource Data Collector 1. Uninstall the SmartSource Data Collector from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. 2. Delete the SmartSource Data Collector installation directory. 3. Install the newest version of SmartSource Data Collector using the stand-alone installation file. Install guide found [here](/v1/docs/installing-smartsource-data-collector). 4. Open the the previous versions dcs.cfg and notate the values for the following settings (most common changes): a. logfiledir b. hostedmodel c. servicemodel d. splitlogs 5. Update the values in the new dcs.cfg to match the previous versions values (with the 9.3 SDC there are additional values specified in the file. Simple copy and paste replacement is not recommended). 6. Replace the webtrendssites.lst files in the cfg folder with the file that we backed up. 7. Restore any log files from the backup to the weblog folder. 8. Restart the The SmartSource Data Collector in IIS. 9. Test SmartSource Data Collector functionality. ## How to test a SmartSource Data Collector installation In order to test, a valid DCSID is required. The DCSID dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p is created by default with new SDC installations. Check the webtrendssites.lst file for a valid DCSID for your installation. If dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p is listed in your webtrendssites.lst file, the following URL can be used for testing: http:///dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p/dcs.gif?dcsuri=/test.html&dcsref=webtrends.com Replace "" with the fully qualified domain name, host name, or IP address of the data collector server and replace the value "dcs5w0txb10000wocrvqy1nqm_6n1p" with the dcsid to be tested.
